The Palmetto has its first 10 teams registered for the 2013 tournament! A special thank you goes out to those who have placed deposits! Current teams competing hail from North Carolina, Wisconsin, Louisiana and South Carolina.

Barefoot Resort Condo Rates

Beach Vacations and Barefoot Resort have provided the Palmetto with great rates for the 2013 tournament. All teams playing can reserve a 3 bedroom condo (5-6 beds) for $124.50/night (2 night minimum). Entry to the 2013 Palmetto High School Golf Championships is now open! Please see our homepage for the newest link to the entry form.

The Palmetto is an open tournament, available to any spring season high school golf team whose home state has approved sanctioning through the National High School Federation. A team must have at least four (4) participants to compete and no more than five (5). Coaches are more than welcome to enter more than one team. If you have any questions about the format, eligibility or event itself, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-833-8798. We hope to see your team in March!

Just announced! Sea Trail Resort will be host to the Saturday final round of the Palmetto High School Golf Championships. The tournament will be utilizing all three resort courses (Rees Jones, Willard Byrd and Dan Maples). With the golf courses finalized we will be opening registration shortly! Barefoot Resort to Host in 2013!

The Palmetto High School Championships is proud to announce Barefoot Resort and Golf as one of the host golf courses for 2013! Barefoot Resort was named by locals as the number one golf course in Myrtle Beach in 2011. Thursday’s qualifier round and Friday’s Tournament Round will be hosted on various courses within the resort. Please stay tuned as rates and information regarding accommodations become available.

The Palmetto has yet to determine which course will host the Saturday Final round. We will keep you posted on all the updates as they come. Entry forms will be available within a few weeks as courses and lodging become finalized. If you have any questions please give us a call at 1-800-833-8798. We look forward to hosting another great High School Championship in Myrtle Beach!

Charlotte Country Day’s Al Dickens thought he had lost his chance for an individual title at the Palmetto High School Golf Championship with a bogey, double bogey finish during the final round at Tiger’s Eye. Moments after walking off the 18^th green, Dickens learned that his 36-hole total of 144 was good enough to earn a sudden death playoff against good friend Charles Spry of Forsyth Country Day School.

Dickens didn’t squander his second chance.

The senior drained a five-foot par putt on the first playoff hole (No. 10), completing a nice up-and-down after finding a fairway bunker, to extend the playoff. Dickens, who entered the tournament 3-0 in playoffs, two-putted for par on the par 3, 11^th hole to defeat Spry, who narrowly missed a 6-footer that would have pushed the playoff to a third hole.

The playoff capped a great tournament for Dickens and his Charlotte Country Day teammates. The Bucs, playing the Parkland Course at Legends Resort in the first round and Tiger’s Eye at Ocean Ridge Plantation in the second, carded a team total of 605, good for a three-shot win over Forestview High School (608) in the Championship Flight. Forsyth Country Day finished third with a total of 611.

The victory was Charlotte Country Day’s first of the season and its first at the Palmetto.

Clover (S.C.) High School shot a two-day total of 644 at Moorland and Panther’s Run to win the first flight, besting Arab (Ala.) High School by five shots. Greer (S.C.) High School’s Ryan Lynn won first flight medalist honors with a score of 150.

Turlock Christian (Calif.), playing at Heathland and Lion’s Paw, won the second flight with a score of 684. Mount Vernon (Mo.) High School was second at 694. Millville (N.J) High School’s Anthony Lofeck captured medalist honors in the second flight, shooting a 155.

The 14^th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship, a 54-hole, college style event, attracted 48 teams from 10 states, including California. All 48 teams played a qualifying round on Thursday and were placed into one of three flights, based on their score, for the 36-hole finish.

Palmetto All-Tournament Teams Announced

La Quinta High School won the 2010 Palmetto High School Golf Championship in sudden death, and, not surprisingly, the California school was well represented on the all-tournament team. La Quinta’s Alfred Castro, who shot a three-day total of 215, was the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Castro fired a 69 during the qualifying round and was one-stroke short of capturing medalist honors.

Joining Castro on the all-tournament team were his Blackhawks teammate Tad Murray (219), Forestview’s Taylor Dickson (220), who captured medalist honors, Wesleyan Christian’s Davis Womble (220), Ryan Cornelius (221) of Orange Lutheran and Pinewood Prep’s Austin Cody (219).

The Palmetto also featured an outstanding crop of young golfers, led by Pinewood Prep’s Richard Hubbard (223), who paced the all-freshman team. Joining Hubbard were Josh Whalen (231) of Napanee District Secondary School, Forestview’s Will Long (232), South Pointe’s Briar Herd (241) and Providence Day School’s Davis Bateman (243).

La Quinta Wins 2010 Palmetto In Sudden Death Playoff

La Quinta (Calif.) High School seniors Alfred Castro, Mark Hicks, Tad Murray, Joey Simonds and Tyler Henry have been friends since grade school. They attended junior golf clinics and have been competing together since they started playing the game, which made their sudden death victory in the 13th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship Saturday at Ocean Ridge Plantation all the sweeter.

After 36 holes of stroke-play competition, La Quinta and Forestview High School (Gastonia, N.C.) were tied at 605. The Palmetto’s rules call for a team, sudden death playoff. All five players for each team competed with the top four scores counting, a format the close knit Blackhawks embraced.

The playoff started and ended on the 375-yard 10th hole on the Lion’s Paw course. Castro, Hicks, Simonds and Murray, all made par 4s, giving La Quinta an aggregate total one stroke better than Forestview.

The Blackhawks bested a field that included 60 teams from 12 states. (Full Scoreboard)

“This is huge,” La Quinta coach Joe Simonds said. “This is about as big (a tournament) as we play. You’ve got teams from all over the nation coming. It’s pretty impressive.”

It was the second win in tournament history for La Quinta, and Castro (3rd), Hicks (t-5th) and Murray (t-12th) all finished in the top 12 individually.

“The thing that makes it special is all five us being such good friends,” Hicks said. “Doing it together, in a sudden death playoff, makes that high of winning even higher.”

It was a disappointing end for Forestview, but the Jaguars played outstanding golf, led by Taylor Dickson, who captured medalist honors after shooting a 70 at Lion’s Paw, the low-round of the day. Dickson finished with a two-day total of 145, same as South Pointe (N.J.) High School’s Miles Curley. Dickson won medalist honors by virtue of shooting the lower round on Saturday.

South Pointe finished third in the championship flight with 36-hole total of 612. Charlotte Country Day, which entered the final round with a one-shot lead, finished fourth (613). Defending tournament champion Pinewood Prep was unable to make a charge and finished fifth (618). Pinewood’s Cody Austin, the 25th ranked junior in the world and the defending medalist winner, shot a 72 at Lion’s Paw and finished fourth (147).

Academic Magnet School won the First Flight with a 36-hole total of 636, six shots better than Diamond Bar (Calif.) High School. Davis Womble of Wesleyan Christian Academy captured medalist honors with a 144. The First Flight played at Lion’s Paw.

Greer (S.C.) High School cruised to victory in the Second Flight, finishing at 653, 19 strokes better than second place Carolina Day School. Greer’s Ryan Lynn won Second Flight medalist honors (150).

Niagara District School won flight three with a two-day total of 698, besting Chapin High School by nine strokes. Nate Butcher of Millville High School (N.J.) and Asheville (N.C.) High School’s Brandon Twigg each shot a 14-over 158, but Twigg’s won the individual competition with his second round 77.

The Second and Third flights played the highly acclaimed Tiger’s Eye layout Saturday at Ocean Ridge.

Pawleys Plantation and Prestwick were among the four courses that hosted the first round of stroke play Friday at the Palmetto High School Golf Championship. Charlotte Country Day is one stroke ahead of LaQuinta (Calif.) in the championship flight, and four teams are within three shots of the lead, setting the stage for an exciting finish at Ocean Ridge Plantation.

13th Annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship Ready To Tee Off

From North Myrtle Beach to the Big Easy to LaQuinta, Calif., high school golf teams from across the United States are gathering in Myrtle Beach for the 13th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship, April 1-3. The largest boys’ high school tournament in the nation, the 2010 Palmetto has attracted 60 teams from 13 states.

The 54-hole, college-style event will be played on 10 of the Grand Strand’s best courses, including five that have been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest. All 60 teams will play a qualifying round on Thursday and then be placed into one of four flights, based on their score, for the 36-hole finish.

Heading into the event, everyone is chasing Pinewood Prep, the defending champion from Summerville, S.C. The Panthers, led by Austin Cody, the 25th ranked junior in the world, according to Golfweek, won the championship flight by 13 strokes in 2009. Cody, the defending medalist winner, was one of three Pinewood players that finished among the top six individuals last year. Richard Hubbard, who finished sixth last year, also returns for Pinewood.

The host courses are the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort, the Love Course at Barefoot Resort, Heritage Club, Lion’s Paw, Panther’s Run, Tiger’s Eye, Pawleys Plantation, Prestwick, Tradition Club and True Blue. Jack Nicklaus, Mike Strantz, Pete Dye and Davis Love are among the big-name architects who have designed tournament courses.

Among the Palmetto’s alumni is rising PGA Tour star Rickie Fowler, who won the event in 2006.
